AADT Dances

While most AADT dances change from semester to semester, the following dances are staples in every AADT show:

BEYOND

BEYOND is AADT’s open-style performance group, founded by Aaron Hai ‘22 and Amy Wang ‘22 in Fall 2021. BEYOND has a greater focus on advanced techniques representative of hip-hop and open style, features original choreography made by AADT members and occasionally guest celebrity choreographers, and requires a higher time commitment. BEYOND focuses on various topics such as cohesion, movement quality, and emotional storytelling.

The goal of BEYOND is to push its dancers to make breakthroughs in their mental, emotional, and physical abilities, as well as to explore and appreciate the intersections between music created by Asian artists and open-style dance.

Along with performing at AADT’s semesterly shows, BEYOND previously performed at outside shows such as Prelude New England, Impact by BU Vibes, Revolution by Northeastern REVOLVE, Exclamation by W!CKED, etc.

FLAGSHIP

Flagship is one of AADT’s oldest traditional ethnic performances, with the goal of appreciating and learning dance styles with significant historical and cultural backgrounds. Flagship has a greater focus on advanced techniques representative of Asian ethnic and folk dance styles, typically featuring a professional choreographer or an adapted set of a professionally performed piece. Flagship requires a higher level of involvement and time commitment. Additional rehearsals allow all levels of dancers to access Flagship, adjust to the style, and learn foundational techniques of the dance style. Members new to traditional dance are also encouraged to participate in expanding their horizons and developing greater traditional techniques through the Flagship experience.

Beyond performing at AADT’s semesterly shows, Flagship typically performs at outside shows such as ARTS FIRST, Cultural Rhythms, Visitas, alongside other invitational shows from other Boston-based colleges.

COMPANY

Company is AADT’s staple foundations dance, targeted primarily towards beginners who seek to gain confidence and become more comfortable in their own bodies. Featuring original choreography created by AADT’s captains, the semester-long dance holds workshop-style rehearsals that focus on hip-hop and open-style foundations. More advanced variations are also taught to prepare dancers for higher levels of dance in the future.

The goal of Company is to foster a welcoming, open community for novice and experienced AADT dancers alike, where all can leave with new friends and renewed belief in their identity as dancers.
